George
Towne (b. 1968) is a Painter and Printmaker who has lived in the East
Village of New York City for over 15 years. He was born in Northeastern
Pennsylvania, and raised in Port Jervis, New York.
Much of his recent work consists of depictions of his community of friends
as a reflection of the contemporary Homosexual psyche. Through touching
and striking portraits, his art simultaneously conveys themes of desire,
loss, longing, and community. The work can be seen to hold historical
and sociological interest, including a past series of seated portraits
depicting gay men who lost their loved ones to AIDS, painted in reverence
of its survivors.
George earned his MFA and BFA degrees from School of Visual Arts, were
he currently teaches Basic Painting/Portfolio Preparation. His work
has been featured in publications such as Time Out New York, Art &
Understanding (a&u), The James White Review, and Blue Magazine (Australia).
He has been in group exhibitions at Richard Anderson Fine Art, the Visual
Arts Museum, Real Art Ways (Hartford), and ABC NO RIO. He has had one-person
exhibitions at The Barbara Ann Levy Gallery, the Delaware Valley Arts
Alliance (Narrowsburg, NY), and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender
Community Center in New York.
An upcoming exhibition of his work will be at The Barbara Ann Levy Gallery
in Cherry Grove, Fire Island, from September 3-20th, 2004.
